With Juan Foyth out with an Achilles rupture, Pau Navarro has seized a starting berth at Villarreal and earned a March under-23 nomination.
Marcelino initially paired Marín with Veiga, then introduced Navarro against Espanyol, where his passing and positioning stood out. El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that the academy graduate addressed an urgent need at the back.
Since then the 20-year-old from La Vilavella has started every league match, with his partner alternating between Marín and Veiga. He is shortlisted for March’s best under-23 alongside Arda Güler, Echeverri, Oso and Víctor Muñoz.
He underlined that case on Friday against Real Sociedad, not dribbled past, winning every ground duel and making six clearances, all inside the box.
Marcelino said he does not pick by age and that Navarro has earned selection through work, delivering consistently with growing calm and assurance.
Navarro thanked for the opportunities and was pleased with the team’s display. He said position does not matter, he feels comfortable in either and only wants to help.
He highlighted their defensive solidity against in-form Real Sociedad, adding that with quality up front, if they defend well they can win most games.
His focus remains on Villarreal, and he said he would be more than happy if a Spain under-21 call arrives.
