The Premier League confirmed Paul Tierney will officiate Leeds United’s trip to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Leeds arrive after booking Wembley with last weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final shootout win at West Ham, and they have not won a Premier League game for two months.
Tierney will be assisted by Richard West and Scott Ledger, with Adam Herczeg as fourth official and John Brooks on VAR.
His season has been split between the Premier League and Championship, with only seven top-flight assignments. He averages 17.43 fouls and 3.43 yellow cards per game, placing him among the more lenient referees.
This will be his first Premier League outing this season in charge of both Leeds and Manchester United. Earlier, he refereed at St Andrew’s when Daniel Farke’s side beat Birmingham City on penalties in the FA Cup fourth round.
Tierney was also VAR for last month’s 1-0 home defeat by Sunderland, when Leeds were denied a clear first-half penalty after Luke O’Nien grabbed Pascal Struijk in the box and Stuart Attwell waved play on. Tierney checked the incident at Stockley Park and did not advise an on-field review, a call later ruled incorrect by the Key Match Incidents panel.
In the following league game, the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, Gabriel Gudmundsson was sent off after two bookings by referee Thomas Bramall. The panel later said the second yellow should not have been issued, with Bramall apparently forgetting the first, then confirming it with fourth official Tierney before producing the red.
