At 16 years and 293 days old, Paul Wanner became the youngest ever player to feature for Bayern Munich in Champions League history as they beat Viktoria Plzeň 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Significantly younger than Mathys Tel (17 years, 139 days), Wanner was introduced in the 70th minute as a replacement for Dayot Upamecano. Primarily an attacking player, Wanner operated at left-back in the closing stages.

“Paul is not a trained left-back but he has done well in training. I too think he did well in the game today,” Julian Nagelsmann told DAZN post-match.

In addition to Wanner and Tel, only four other Bayern players made their Champions League debut before their 18th birthday: Bright Arrey-Mbi (17 years, 250 days), Jamal Musiala (17 years, 251 days), David Alaba (17 years, 258 days ) and Berkant Göktan (17 years, 292 days).

At 16 years and 15 days, Wanner is also Bayern Munich’s youngest player to feature in the Bundesliga. Only Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko (16 years, 1 day) was younger than Wanner to feature in the league. Moukoko also holds the all-time record for youngest player to feature in the Champions League at 16 years and 18 days.
