Olympiacos’ emergency striker search is beginning to separate candidates from realistic targets.

Paulinho appears to be the latest example. The Portuguese striker emerged earlier this week as one of the names being evaluated to strengthen the attack following Ayoub El Kaabi’s serious injury. The sporting logic was obvious. He is experienced. He scores consistently. He understands combination play and unlike a pure penalty-box striker, Paulinho has historically been capable of connecting attacks as well as finishing them.

Unfortunately, there was always one enormous obstacle.

Toluca did not need to sell him.

Paulinho renewed his contract earlier this year through 2029 and has established himself as one of the central figures of an enormously successful Toluca side. Greek reporting had already acknowledged that the long-term deal made any transfer extremely difficult.

Now reporting from Mexico suggests Paulinho himself has effectively ended the discussion.

The approach reportedly never reached Toluca

Bolavip México reports that Olympiacos contacted Paulinho directly, but that a formal club-to-club negotiation with Toluca had not yet taken place. That tells us this was likely a feasibility check.

Before attempting to negotiate a potentially expensive transfer with Toluca, Olympiacos needed to establish whether the player was interested in returning to Europe.

According to the Mexican report, he was not.

There is little value negotiating a fee for a 33-year-old striker under contract until 2029 if the player himself has no desire to leave. If the report is accurate, Olympiacos found that out early enough to pivot.

Why would Paulinho say no?

The answer appears largely personal rather than sporting. Paulinho is reportedly settled in Mexico with his family and happy with his situation at Toluca. He renewed his contract precisely because both player and club viewed the relationship as a long-term one.

There is also very little competitive incentive for Toluca to lose him. They have been one of Mexico’s dominant sides and Paulinho remains productive. He even scored in Toluca’s 5–2 victory over Atlas on Saturday night, hours after the rejection reports appeared. So this was not an unwanted veteran looking for an exit.

Olympiacos were trying to convince a successful striker to leave an environment in which he is already comfortable, well-paid and competing for trophies. That was always going to require an exceptional offer.

This puts more pressure on the Icardi decision

If Paulinho is genuinely off the table, Mauro Icardi becomes even more prominent. The two cases, however, could hardly be more different. Paulinho requires a deal with Toluca. Icardi is a free agent. Paulinho appears settled and reluctant to move. Icardi reportedly wants to remain in European football.

Paulinho is currently playing within an established successful structure. Icardi would arrive needing to rebuild rhythm and integrate immediately. So while Icardi is theoretically easier to acquire administratively, he may represent the bigger sporting gamble. Olympiacos now need to decide whether the upside justifies it.

Alguacil’s influence becomes even more important

This should not simply become a process of moving down a list. Paulinho rejected? Call Icardi. Icardi says no?

Call Mouandilmadji. That would be poor recruitment.

Imanol Alguacil has already emphasized that he wants players suited to the football he is building.

Saturday’s loss to OFI reinforced why. Olympiacos need a striker who can participate in pressure, connect midfield to attack and still provide genuine penalty-area threat. Paulinho would have offered several of those characteristics. Icardi offers a different profile. Mouandilmadji offers another again.

The correct response to losing one candidate is therefore not simply to pursue the next famous name.

It is to reassess which remaining player actually fits.

And Armando González just gained another opportunity

There is another consequence. Every striker deal that becomes more complicated gives Armando González additional time to establish himself. Alguacil has already spoken positively about his willingness to learn while acknowledging the considerable development still required.

If Paulinho is gone and negotiations elsewhere drag on, González could receive another start against Jagiellonia. That would give him something more valuable than any transfer rumor can provide:

minutes.

Olympiacos still need another forward because El Kaabi’s absence creates a genuine depth problem,

but the urgency should not become desperation. Paulinho appears to have made his decision.
