Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca has reportedly held a one-on-one meeting with underperforming megastar Theo Hernandez. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Calciomercato, Fonseca pulled the French left-back aside for a chat, demanding an explanation for his unfathomable downfall.
Rafael Leao and Hernandez have seemingly been at loggerheads with Fonseca since the Portuguese tactician’s arrival in the summer. The former Roma manager even benched Milan talismans in several Serie A matches earlier this season in a desperate attempt to show them who’s in charge.
However, Fonseca’s actions might have had an unwanted effect. Despite scoring some vital goals for Milan, Leao’s form wobbles have been noticeable. On the other hand, Hernandez’s performances have been in freefall, especially in recent weeks.
Following a lackluster showing in a 2-1 defeat at Atalanta last Friday, the 27-year-old delivered another sub-par display against Crvena Zvezda in midweek UEFA Champions League action. Since he has been instrumental to Milan since arriving from Real Madrid in 2019, his dip in form affects the whole squad.
Unfortunately for the Rossoneri faithful, Hernandez isn’t the only Milan star struggling with a see-saw form. Captain Davide Calabria has been up the creek without a paddle since the beginning of the season. The same goes for Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Samuel Chukwueze.
Per the same report, Fonseca met all of the face-to-face. Milan will resume their faltering pursuit of a top-four finish in Serie A on Sunday with a must-win home encounter against Genoa. It will be a perfect chance for Hernandez to prove his worth and demonstrate his commitment to the team.
