Flamengo is classified for the semi-finals of the Campeonato Carioca but the performances have not pleased the fans, having lost the Taça Guanabara to Fluminense.

Their narrow victory against Vasco was rather fortunate, with Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s late goal saving themselves from the consequeces of another below-normal performance.

The Uruguayan has undoubtedly been Flamengo’s best player this season and Paulo Sousa has admitted that they’ve been too reliant on him.

“He is an astronomical player who has the ability to change the game, to change spaces, and feed our attack,” he said.

“At the same time, he has the ability to make a difference with goals in decisive moments.

“Undoubtedly, the team has to be less and less dependent on the individual and have more capacity to solve the complexities that opponents create and translate that into goals and victories.

“But without a doubt, players (like Arrascaeta) make a difference and it’s good to have them on our side.”

Flamengo will close out their Campeonato Carioca regular-season campaign against Bangu this weekend.
