Paulo Sousa was critical of his Flamengo side’s attitude after they needed two late goals to earn a draw against Resende in the Campeonato Carioca on Sunday.
It was a day to forget for veteran Rubro-Negro goalkeeper Diego Alves.
The 36-year-old failed to claim a high ball in his area to allow Emanuel Biancucchi to open the scoring at the Estádio Nilton Santos.
And he was caught in no man’s land as Jeffinho rounded him to pass the ball into an empty net eight minutes from time.
Flamengo rallied in the dying stages as Giorgian de Arrascaeta rifled home in the 90th minute before Gabriel Barbosa levelled from the spot in the fifth minute of stoppage time after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.
Nevertheless it was a disappointing performance from the Mengão, which their manager acknowledged afterwards.
“As I said to the boys: we can’t think about Carnival before we win our games,” Sousa told reporters.
“We have to demand of ourselves to be able to do what we are destined to do: be superior, score goals, be effective, have the right mindset, win the game and then we can have fun.”
The point leaves them second in the Carioca table, four points behind leaders Fluminense.
Flamengo will now have a week to prepare to face Vasco da Gama in the same competition.
