PC Oliveira said Jorge Carrascal’s Supercopa do Brasil dismissal was legally correct, but he criticised the VAR’s handling of the review during Flamengo v Corinthians on Sunday, speaking on sportv’s Fechamento.
Just before the interval, referee Rafael Klein whistled a foul by Matheus Bidu on Rossi, waited for a VAR check, told captains Arrascaeta and Gustavo Henrique there was no image available, then ended the half.
Late in the first half Carrascal struck Breno Bidon in the face. He returned after the interval but was sent off before the restart, with Klein reviewing the footage on the teams’ return.
Oliveira said the red was right for violent conduct, which carries no time limit, yet called the procedure poor. He questioned when VAR accessed the images, why no on-field review came before the break, and urged the release of full audio for transparency. He also asked whether pressure influenced the timing.
The CBF said in a statement that the VAR began checking immediately, initial images were inconclusive and half-time was called, then a further check during the interval provided clear evidence of violent conduct by Carrascal on Bidon with play stopped, leading to a recommendation for review and the dismissal. It added the process is permitted by the 2025/26 Laws and FIFA’s VAR protocol, which allow intervention at any time, including after a restart.
