FC Barcelona win their second game in La Liga this season with a solid performance over Athletic Club. From start to finish, Hansi Flick’s team had great control over proceedings and would have scored several more goals had it not been for the heroics of Unai Simon.
A 2-0 victory, La Blaugrana were clearly the better team and created several promising chances. Following that performance, Hansi Flick can surely be happy with the way his players performed.
Here are the player ratings for Barcelona.
Starting XI
Joan Garcia: 8.0/10
Amazing performance from the Spanish goalkeeper, who knew exactly when to come out of his box and ease the pressure from his teammates with a few key sweeping interventions.
Eric Garcia: 8.5/10
Dealt with a lot of defensive situations really well and his creative ability was great to see as well. Provided support to both his fellow defenders and forwards throughout the game.
Pau Cubarsi: 8.0/10
Finally made his return for Barcelona following his triumph in the FIFA World Cup, and his quality seems to have improved even more. With his refined defending and exceptional passing, Barça always had an advantage.
Gerard Martin: 8.0/10
Yet another clean sheet for Barça, Gerard Martin continues to solidify his place in this team. Alongside Cubarsi, he felt comfortable carrying the ball forward from the left and distributing it to his teammates.
Xavi Espart: 8.0/10
His vision remains a delight to see and his executed passes always pave the way for his teammates in one way or another. Despite his age and the fact that he is playing out of position, Xavi Espart remains quite the effective asset.
Marc Bernal: 7.0/10
Much better from Marc Bernal in this game, as the young midfielder did well to lock down the midfield this time around. His passing was solid and he well to win his duels as well.
Pedri: 9.5/10
Magical performance from the Spanish maestro, who conducted the entirety of the play for Barcelona in this game. He even produced a sublime assist for Raphinha’s goal with a beautiful passage of play.
Lamine Yamal: 8.0/10
Unlucky in the final third for much of the game, but he grew into the match as it went on and created several good chances. Always a threat, and this was a clear improvement from his previous performance.
Fermin Lopez: 8.5/10
Yet another game in which Fermin Lopez manages to find the back of the net thanks to his genuine goal-scoring instincts. Beyond that goal, his work-rate and willingness to fight for every ball were great to see.
Anthony Gordon: 8.5/10
Genuinely understands the team’s structure and was making full use of the empty spaces. His dribbling and ability on the ball was pristine, and it was amazing to see him link up so well with his teammates.
Raphinha: 9.0/10
Sensational performance from the captain once again. Scored the opening goal with a great run and finish, and his work-rate beyond that was impressive as always throughout the match.
Substitutes:
Karim Adeyemi: 7.5/10
Immediately impacted the game with his speed and intensity, forcing an error from Athletic Club that led to Fermin Lopez finding the back of the net.
Rodri: 7.5/10
The Spaniard made his Barcelona debut at long last and did not disappoint. While he could still be sharper in possession, his defensive contributions were crucial.
Jules Kounde: 6.0/10
Came into the game late, but looked solid defensively.
