Born of 1940s radio theatre, Pedrín, el fainero, grew from fictional Boca everyman into an enduring xeneize emblem.
According to Sitiboca.com.ar, he appeared in “La gran pensión El campeonato” on Radio Belgrano when radio dominated daily life. He was instantly recognisable, tousled hair, thick moustache, pizza in hand, blue and gold shirt and an eternal smile.
The story centred on a boarding house where each tenant backed a club and vied to win the landlady’s daughter, “Miss Campeonato”. Boca’s man was Pedrín, a pizzero, stout, moustachioed, generous and always cheerful, his passion for Boca trumping hardship.
Popularity followed swiftly, then reality chimed in. In 1943 and 1944 Boca halted River’s La Máquina and were crowned back-to-back champions. On air, Pedrín, played by capocómico Félix Mutarelli, won “Miss Campeonato”, portrayed by Cheché March, Hilda Viñas, Herminia Franco or Carmen Vallejos.
The character soon outgrew the airwaves, appearing on flags, dolls and among fans at La Bombonera with wig, moustache and prop pizza. Title parties often paired him with a “girlfriend”, a symbolic trophy.
Without ever kicking a ball, Pedrín entered Boca folklore as shorthand for loyalty, joy and perseverance. His legacy sits beyond statistics or official titles, alive in every flag, every goal roar and in each bostero’s heart. Pedrín, el fainero, remains an eternal champion of popular passion.
