Vasco have reached agreement to appoint Renato Gaúcho as head coach, with final paperwork being completed. According to Globo.com, he will be the fourth managerial hire of Pedrinho’s tenure at São Januário.

The hierarchy has doubled down on Brazilian managers. Under Pedrinho, the first team has been led by Rafael Paiva, Fábio Carille and Fernando Diniz, all Brazilian.

The first coach of the Pedrinho era was Portuguese Álvaro Pacheco, recruited by 777 on the recommendation of Pedro Martins and then chief executive Lúcio Barbosa. Pedrinho took charge of football with that deal already in place. Pacheco was dismissed in less than a month in June after three defeats in four league matches, including a 6-1 loss to Flamengo.

The club’s choice contrasts with Rio rivals, who will all finish 2026 with foreign coaches. Fluminense are led by Argentine Luis Zubeldía, while Botafogo have compatriot Martín Anselmi, their fourth foreign appointment in a row after Artur Jorge, Renato Paiva and Davide Ancelotti. Flamengo sacked Filipe Luís on Tuesday and have reached agreement with Portuguese Leonardo Jardim, having also hired Vitor Pereira and Jorge Sampaoli in 2023.

Renato Gaúcho is tasked with hauling Vasco out of the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation zone and breaking a trend of short tenures under Pedrinho, where the average stint is five months. His backroom team will include long-time colleagues Marcelo Salles and Alexandre Mendes. His first match is due against Palmeiras on the 12th.
