Pedrinho pushes for Vasco v Flamengo at São Januário, questions recent BEPE vetoes | OneFootball

Vasco will again seek to stage the Brasileiro clássico against Flamengo at São Januário, after president Pedrinho set out the plan on Friday. According to Globo.com, it extends a dispute over Maracanã access and a push for equal treatment in the league.

Vasco say an agreement lets them host Flamengo and Fluminense at the Maracanã, plus up to four other matches each year. They believe this has not been honoured after requests to face Vitória and Palmeiras there in the Copa do Brasil were rejected.

In response, the club want the Flamengo game at São Januário to enforce home advantage. They calculate they host only 17 of 38 league matches there, while Flamengo and Fluminense, meeting Vasco at the Maracanã in both rounds, enjoy 21 home dates.

Last year Pedrinho’s board moved the Carioca semi-final to Nilton Santos to maximise the home factor. An attempt to stage the league meeting at São Januário was vetoed by BEPE, which cited risk analyses covering the ground and its perimeter for fixtures of this nature.

Vasco dispute that, arguing police secure other high-risk games at São Januário against Santos, Corinthians and Cruzeiro, and even New Year crowds. Pedrinho has appealed to public authorities and BEPE, adding he will not rely on the Maracanã contract and wants this clássico in São Januário.

The clubs last met at São Januário in the 2020 Brasileiro. Flamengo won 2-1, with Talles Magno, Bruno Henrique and Léo Pereira scoring, and a late Germán Cano effort was ruled out by VAR. The match was behind closed doors due to Covid-19.
