Pedrinho has set a deadline to appoint Vasco’s new head coach by next Sunday, with the aim of the Campeonato Carioca semi-final second leg against Fluminense. There is no guarantee the new man will be on the touchline.
Work began within minutes of Fernando Diniz’s sacking being announced on Sunday 22, with meetings and approaches launched to find a successor. According to PaponaColina, the president and football chiefs are driving an accelerated process.
The board want a coach who keeps the side’s attacking blueprint, built under Diniz, while repairing the defence at once. Leadership and people management are prioritised to lift morale and shield players from fan pressure. Preference is for out-of-work candidates to avoid clauses and speed arrival in Rio.
Within that framework, Renato Gaúcho has emerged as frontrunner. Director of football Admar Lopes spent Monday 23 assessing options and spoke with the coach’s representatives, who signalled readiness to return. Renato has been unattached since leaving Fluminense in September 2025 and already lives in the city.
Even so, Vasco will proceed cautiously before making any formal offer. The hierarchy plan to study the financial impact of each approved target first. Other names have been tested, but Renato’s profile most closely matches the dressing-room manager the club seek now.
In the meantime, permanent assistant Bruno Lazaroni leads preparations and will take charge away to Santos on Thursday 26 in the Campeonato Brasileiro at Vila Belmiro. A decision on the new boss is expected soon after that fixture.
