Pedro drew level at the top of the Série A scoring charts as Flamengo drew 2-2 with Vasco at the Maracanã. His strike moved him to eight in 14 rounds, alongside Athletico-PR’s Kevin Viveros.

According to Globo.com, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti attended the clássico and witnessed Pedro take a deft right-foot touch to escape a defender before a firm left-foot finish without letting the ball drop.

Among those Ancelotti has previously called are Danilo, Alex Sandro, Léo Pereira, Léo Ortiz, Paquetá and Samuel Lino. Pedro has not yet been selected by him, though he made a provisional list last year before a forearm fracture against Racing of Argentina in the Libertadores semi-finals.

Injuries and a dip under Filipe Luís had stalled his bid for a second World Cup. The arrival of Leonardo Jardim has revived him, with eight goals and one assist across his past nine matches.

Pedro was the standout in the Clássico dos Milhões, linking play, creating a clear chance spurned by Luiz Araújo and winning the penalty converted by Jorginho. The display comes 15 days before the final World Cup call-up, which will be announced on 18.

Yet to be tested in Ancelotti’s one-year cycle, he is racing to convince the coach there is room for a more technical centre-forward. Before 18, Flamengo visit Independiente Medellín on Thursday at 21:30 Brasília time in the Libertadores group stage, Grêmio on Sunday at 19:30 in the league, Vitória on 14 at 21:30 in the Copa do Brasil, then Athletico-PR on 17 at 19:30 in the league.
