Three years ago to the day, Manchester City were handed a staggering 115 charges surrounding alleged breaches of financial rules by the Premier League.
The anniversary of that initial announcement arrives with the case still unresolved, despite the scale of the investigation and length of time that has passed since proceedings formally began.
For Manchester City supporters, the lack of clarity continues to hover over both the club’s long-term planning and its wider reputation within English football. An independent hearing was concluded some time ago, yet the absence of a published verdict has fuelled ongoing debate across the Premier League.
Legal experts have consistently pointed to the complexity of the case, while from City’s perspective, the club has remained steadfast throughout, repeatedly insisting on its innocence and maintaining that it holds a comprehensive body of evidence to refute allegations.
The charges themselves relate to alleged financial rules breaches across a prolonged period between 2009 and 2018, including claims of inaccurate reporting and misrepresentation of sponsorship revenue.
Now, speaking ahead of Manchester City’s trip to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, Pep Guardiola has been quizzed on whether it is a frustrating situation to still not have a resolution on the matter after three years since the first release of the 115 charges.
“It’s not in my hands,” Guardiola responded. The Catalan coach continued, “Waiting for the resolution.”
Pep Guardiola’s brief response mirrors his long-standing stance on the issue, having consistently distanced himself from the legal process and reiterated that the matter sits beyond his remit as first-team manager.
The Manchester City manager has previously stressed that his focus remains solely on preparing his players and competing on the pitch, while the matter is being handled by those he trusts most in high-ranking positions within the Etihad Stadium.
Nevertheless, potential consequences continue to loom large, and some have suggested that should City be found guilty, punishment could extend to a severe points deduction while the theoretical possibility of expulsion from the Premier League has not been entirely dismissed.
Until a final ruling is delivered, Manchester City will continue to operate under a cloud of uncertainty, with Pep Guardiola, his players, and supporters left waiting for clarity.
