It’s only been a matter of weeks since Pep Guardiola left Manchester City but he’s barely been out of the headlines since.

After 10 successful years at the Etihad with 17 major trophies won, it’s no surprise to see him linked with a range of jobs, but Guardiola is unlikely to jump into any old role right away.

The 55-year-old was on the Italian Football Federation’s wish list, after they were forced to watch the 2026 World Cup from afar having failed to qualify for the third successive tournament.

The two parties held talks, but it is believed they couldn’t agree terms, so the Spaniard walked away and will continue his break from the game.

It has been suggested Guardiola found out he was second choice for the role after Carlo Ancelotti, which may have played a part in the talks breaking down, as could the reported demands of £17m a year.

At one point he was odds-on for the role according to football betting sites, but he is now favourite to replace Thomas Tuchel as manager of England.

England might not have reached that elusive final, but the FA did extend Tuchel’s contract in February to lead them through to Euro 2028, and third place is unlikely to be deemed a sackable offence.

The FA have been long-time admirers of former Manchester City and Barcelona boss Guardiola, and it is believed the pair had a verbal agreement before Tuchel's appointment.
