Pep Guardiola has responded to Ruben Amorim’s dismissal by Manchester United, praising his counterpart and wishing him well. Speaking the day after the official announcement, and according to L'Équipe, the Manchester City manager said in his press conference he respected the players and the institutions and called Amorim a top manager.

Amorim had been in charge at Old Trafford for 14 months, and his exit had been widely anticipated, particularly after his comments following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds at Elland Road.

United are sixth in the Premier League, 17 points off leaders Arsenal, and have drawn their last two matches. Guardiola reflected that coaches are hired for ideas but dismissed for results, and sometimes time is needed.

He suggested that without the home draws with Wolverhampton, 1-1, and Bournemouth, 4-4, United could be closer to Arsenal. He also pointed to a long injury list and key absences at the Africa Cup of Nations.

City are dealing with fitness issues too, with Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol currently sidelined.
