Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted he would like to see progression and a stern challenge from England at the next FIFA World Cup in 2026.
As the international spotlight begins to turn across the Atlantic and the upcoming global tournament, discussion around the leading contenders is already heating up. Guardiola, deep into City’s domestic schedule, was inevitably drawn into the conversation during his latest media duties.
Having long maintained a respect for the culture and competitive spirit within the English game, and it is perhaps no surprise that he feels a sense of connection ahead of a competition where several of his own players will wear the Three Lions badge.
England’s quest to finally take the last step on the world stage for the first time since 1966 continues to be a point of national curiosity, especially with the calibre of talent available to new head coach Thomas Tuchel in the current cycle.
With the Premier League calendar intensifying, Guardiola still found time to reflect on how football’s biggest tournament could unfold. And with the World Cup group stage draw now complete, the Catalan coach was keen to emphasise the familiar hierarchy of contenders.
Speaking to reporters prior to Manchester City’s clash with Sunderland, Guardiola was asked for his thoughts on the favourites and contenders to claim football’s greatest prize next summer.
“The same ones. Everybody knows. We will be in agreement about the candidates, maybe there will be a surprise, but we’ll agree if we name the three, four, five candidates. Everybody knows it,” Guardiola insisted.
However, the City boss continued by showing his support for the Three Lions, as he continued, “I would like England to be there.
“But I don’t want to pretend to be too nice, but I’ve been here many years and being part of this country, I would love Thomas [Tuchel] and the people to make the last step and do it.”
Pep Guardiola’s remarks will inevitably be welcomed by England fans, not least because several Manchester City stars are expected to play decisive roles at the 2026 tournament.
The manager has frequently praised the technical growth of English players in recent years, and his admiration for the squad’s evolution appears to strengthen his belief that the team is edging closer to major-trophy success.
Looking ahead, England’s performance will almost certainly be influenced by the domestic form and fitness of City’s key stars. Should several of Guardiola’s players arrive in peak condition, Tuchel’s side may indeed possess the necessary depth and maturity to challenge.
In the broader context, Pep Guardiola’s public support may also set the stage for further discussion about how the Premier League’s elite clubs contribute to international success. With City continuing to shape the careers of numerous England internationals, their influence on the World Cup narrative could be more pronounced than ever.
