The thoughts of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola concerning one of their top summer transfer targets has now been detailed in Italian media.
The former Premier league champions are expected to embark on a busy summer of transfer activity both in the way of arrivals and departures as club officials aim to get Guardiola’s squad back to its competitive best following a difficult season.
Much of the work began back in the January transfer window, when City signed off on a spend north of £170 million and welcomed in four players directly into their first-team squad, with a number of other arrivals viewed as talents for the future.
Among the names to come into the club was Nico Gonzalez in a big-money deal with FC Porto – a position viewed as vital by officials and supporters as they looked to get on top of the void left by Rodri’s long-term injury.
The Spaniard has been a success since arriving but has struggled to secure the consistent opportunities many would have expected from him during the second-half of the season, while the latest indications are that City want to invest further in the middle of the park.
Following on from reports in England, according to the information of Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola views AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders as the ‘ideal reinforcement’ for his midfield.
While contacts between the two clubs are yet to be opened and City are yet to have spoken to the player’s representatives, it is reported – as translated and relayed by Sport Witness – that such movements will be considered over the course of the next few weeks.
From the side of Manchester City, the Premier League giants are currently said to be studying what the right offer would be for the Netherlands international, with the report expecting an offer in excess of €70 million.
There is a belief in some quarters that City could spend north of £300 million during the upcoming summer transfer window, with Reijnders unlikely to be the only central midfield arrival should he find an agreement with the club.
Having confirmed via various platforms of the decision to not renew Kevin De Bruyne’s contract beyond this summer, the club also have the mammoth task of replacing the legendary Belgian creative midfielder.
The widespread understanding is that Florian Wirtz would be Manchester City’s preferred successor, although German media are reporting that Bayern Munich lead the chase for the Bayer Leverkusen star and by some margin.
The current line of reporting emerging from those closer to the Etihad Stadium is that officials within the club are still awaiting a decision from the player on his future.
