Villarreal announced on Monday evening that veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina will be leaving the club. But even at 41 years of age, retirement is not at the front of his mind.
This comes amidst a period of transition for the club, who are looking to offload some of their bigger earners and bring in some more youthful players.
Relevo has reported that retirement will only be considered once all other avenues have been explored for the legendary goalkeeper.
Reina played 12 times in all competitions for Villarreal last season, with seven of those appearances coming in the Europa League.
As a consummate professional, Pepe Reina took the news gracefully, thanking the club on his X account.
Reina is a true Spanish football legend, having won two Euros and a World Cup for Spain, alongside an FA Cup and League Cup for Liverpool and a Coppa Italia for Napoli.
The goalkeeper’s family are settled in Villarreal, but reports indicate that only if Reina shouldn’t find a suitable destination for a new club, will he then hang up his gloves.
