Per Mertesacker has revealed that he would be open to working for the German Football Association (DFB), adding that he would welcome the opportunity to give something back to the game that shaped his career.
Speaking amid ongoing discussions about the future of the DFB's leadership structure, the 2014 World Cup winner said he would be willing to take on responsibility if asked.
"At some point, working for the DFB and giving something back to German football, which has given me so much, if that is wanted - I would, of course, be available," Mertesacker said.
His comments come as the DFB continues to search for a new direction following the announced departure of sporting director Andreas Rettig, while reports continue to link Jürgen Klopp with the national team head coach position.
Mertesacker recently stepped down as head of Arsenal's academy after eight years in the role, ending a 15-year association with the Premier League club. During his tenure, he was widely praised for overseeing the development of several young talents and helping shape Arsenal's long-term academy structure.
However, the former centre-back stressed that he is not planning an immediate return to football administration. He intends to finish his duties as a television pundit for ZDF during the FIFA World Cup before taking a well-earned break.
"I also wanted to take some time after 15 years at Arsenal, including eight years at the academy, to reflect on everything I experienced there," Mertesacker explained.
While there is no indication that formal talks with the DFB have taken place, the 104-cap Germany international has made it clear that he would be interested in returning to German football should the right opportunity arise.
