Vasilis Barkas has “been a disaster” for Celtic, according to Pete O’Rourke.

What’s been said?

In a recent interview with Football FanCast, the transfer insider stated his belief that, despite high expectations following the goalkeeper’s £5m arrival at Parkhead back in July of 2020, things have just not worked out of the Greece international in Glasgow – with the journalist going on to claim it would suit all parties if the 27-year-old were to move onto pastures new this summer.

Speaking about the situation of the shot-stopper, O’Rourke said: “It hasn’t worked out – this has happened in the past. At every club, some signings don’t work out, it’s just the nature of football. I think it’s probably best now for all parties to move on. It’s been a move that has been a disaster, to be fair.”

Would you be happy to see Barkas leave on a free this summer?

Postecoglou must axe Barkas

It is not difficult to understand why O’Rourke believes Celtic’s signing of Barkas has been something of a disaster, as, to put it bluntly, the 27-year-old is probably up there as one the worst transfers the Hoops have ever made.

Indeed, over his 15 Premiership appearances last season, the £1.35m-rated goalkeeper endured a torrid debut campaign at Celtic Park, making an average of just one save and conceding 0.7 goals per game.

These returns saw the £20k-per-week shot-stopper earn an extremely disappointing seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.79, ranking him as the Bhoys’ joint ninth-worst player in the top flight of Scottish football.

One Two Three Four

Furthermore, since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival in Scotland last summer, the player who Tam McManus dubbed “horrendous” has made just two first-team appearances, falling behind Joe Hart, Scott Bain and even Tobi Oluwayemi in the 56-year-old’s pecking order between the Celtic sticks.

As such, it would indeed appear to suit all parties if Barkas were to depart Parkhead this summer, as not only is the goalkeeper wasting some of the best years of his career on the Celtic bench, he is also costing the club a considerable amount of money each week in wages.
