yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk reports that Peter Bankes, the referee at the centre of a recent Leeds United dispute, has been appointed to referee the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

He will oversee Arsenal v Manchester City on Sunday March 22. His team includes assistant referees Neil Davies and Steve Meredith, fourth official Tom Bramall, and VAR John Brooks.

Bankes hit the headlines after showing a post-match red card to Leeds head coach Daniel Farke following their game against Manchester City at Elland Road. Farke was angered that the final whistle went only seconds after the minimum six minutes of stoppage time, despite City cautions for time wasting.

After congratulating Pep Guardiola, Farke ran onto the pitch and was shown red. He said he jogged over without swearing or waving his arms, seeking to ask why no extra time was added after a yellow for time wasting, and that the card came before he could finish.

He called it the first red card of his career and said Bankes had embarrassed him. Leeds did not appeal, Farke accepted a fine and sat out the Norwich City FA Cup tie, avoiding the risk of a failed appeal that could have left him in the stands for a pair of Premier League games.

Bankes had also faced criticism for awarding Arsenal a free-kick rather than allowing Randal Kolo Muani's goal for Spurs to stand in the North London derby.
