Enrique Riquelme has put privatisation at the heart of Real Madrid’s presidential race, warning that opening the door to foreign investment could jeopardise the club’s member-owned model.
"There is also the Valencia model, which is privatised, in someone's hands," he said. He cited Valencia CF and Peter Lim as a warning. He was speaking to El Larguero on Cadena Ser.
The businessman, who is challenging long-serving president Florentino Pérez, says he opposes any sale of a stake in the club.
Riquelme has been unveiling campaign appointments across the sporting and executive areas. On Monday he named Raúl González Blanco as his prospective sporting director if he wins.
He contends that letting outside capital in would be the start of privatisation and argues Madrid could cease to be owned by its socios if that route is taken. He also flagged risks to the club’s democracy and day-to-day management.
