Legendary Sunderland manager Peter Reid returned to the Roker Hotel on Saturday to launch celebrations for his 70th. He turns 70 on 20 June, and a packed room of supporters and friends welcomed him back to Wearside.
According to Sunderland Echo, North East broadcaster Paul Goffy Gough led an on-stage journey through Reid’s life and career, mixing humour and reflection. The evening became a warm celebration of his impact on club and city.
Tributes came from promotion stalwarts Kevin Phillips and Micky Gray, with Phillips crediting Reid as the biggest influence on his career. Chris Kamara also reflected on their long friendship, while video messages featured Tony Mowbray, Peter Shilton and Roy Chubby Brown.
There were tender moments too, from Reid’s lifelong devotion to Everton to his connection with the late Bradley Lowery. One of the loudest ovations came as he entered to Cheer Up Peter Reid, the audience rising to sing the anthem.
Reid called the night an emotional rollercoaster, mixing laughter with memories that moved him. He said Sunderland and its people still mean the world after a seven year journey, and noted one attendee who met his late wife during a hospital visit. He has enjoyed watching the club’s recent progress and being back at games.
Over the weekend he visited former assistant Bobby Saxton, known as Sacko, their partnership spanning the move from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light. To finish, Gough presented a Sunderland-themed cake, champagne and a framed montage, rounding off a tribute.
