Peter Reid made an emotional return to Roker for a packed celebration at the Roker Hotel on Saturday six June. He turns 70 on 20 June.

According to Sunderland Echo, broadcaster Paul Goffy Gough led a career-spanning conversation filled with laughter, memories and tributes from friends, team-mates, players and colleagues.

Kevin Phillips and Micky Gray led the acclaim, with Phillips calling Reid the greatest influence on his career. Chris Kamara reflected on their friendship and Goals on Sunday partnership. Video messages came from Tony Mowbray, Peter Shilton and Roy Chubby Brown.

The programme also touched on his devotion to Everton and his bond with the late Bradley Lowery. He entered to the Cheer Up Peter Reid anthem, prompting a standing, singalong welcome.

Reid said the night felt like an emotional rollercoaster and that the ovation will stay with him. He praised a seven-year journey with Sunderland and thanked supporters, including one who shared a cherished hospital-visit memory. He added that he has enjoyed the club’s recent progress and returning to matches.

During his Wearside weekend he visited former assistant Bobby Saxton, known as Sacko. Together they oversaw a memorable era, guiding Sunderland from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light.

To close, organiser Gough presented a Sunderland-themed cake, champagne and a framed montage of Reid’s years at the club. For many, it felt more than a birthday, a tribute to his enduring bond with Sunderland and the city.
