Petr Cech has been voted the Premier League’s greatest goalkeeper by HaytersTV readers and viewers.
We polled HaytersTV subscribers on our YouTube community and nearly 10,000 people voted the former Chelsea and Arsenal keeper as the best in the 32 year history of the league.
The Czech goalkeeper won with 53 per cent of the vote, followed by Edwin Van der Sar with 21 per cent, Liverpool’s Allison came third with 11 per centand David De Gea placed fourth on six per cent.
However, not all voters agreed with the choice of participants with a significant nine percent of the HaytersTV audience telling us they wanted to voted for other No.1s.
Peter Schmeichel, for example, was a popular choice. Some of the comments included one from @gavincrawley who said: ‘Schmeichel and i’m an LFC fan. Enormous, intimidating and had a red nose like Rudolph :)’. Big Gav was supported by @dutchgiggler4824 who commented: “It’s definitely Peter Schmeichel”’ and Arsenal fan @jc6087 who stated: ‘Peter Schmeichel and I’m a Gooner.’
Cech started his career for Chmel Blsany in 1999 and signed for Chelsea in 2004, becoming the focal point of their defence under Jose Mourinho. He went on to win the Golden Glove that season keeping 24 clean sheets and conceding only 15 goals, still a record for the fewest in the league, as Chelsea were crowned champions. Cech spent 11 years at Chelsea winning four titles. He finished his playing career at Arsenal under current Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.
Van der Sar signed for Manchester United in 2005 after four years at Fulham. The Dutch goalkeeper, who won 130 caps for his country, went on to win four Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson continuing the dominance by United in that era. He spent six years at the club and proved to be a key part of United’s defence under Ferguson. He left United in 2011 and strangely, finished his career with a one and only appearance for VV Noordwijk.
Allison signed for Liverpool in July 2018 making the move from Italian side Roma. To date, he has made 304 appearances keeping 103 clean sheets along the way. He helped Liverpool to win their first league title in 30 years in 2020. He won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and has made 70 appearances for Brazil at the time of voting.
David De Gea moved to Manchester United in 2011 from Atletico Madrid. De Gea remained the number one goalkeeper at United for 12 years under nine different managers. Finishing his Premier League career at United leaving in 2023 after the expiration of his contract, the Spain international signed for Fiorentina after a year out of the game.
