The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) are threatening to sue the Premier League if a new salary cap is introduced, per the Daily Mail.
English top-flight clubs are set to vote on anchoring, which would restrict the amount of money they can spend on wages, agents and transfer fees to a multiple of the bottom team’s income.
The Premier League are planning to introduce anchoring alongside the squad cost ratio (SCR) system to replace the existing financial rules, which allow clubs to lose £105 million over three years.
Manchester United and Manchester City are opposed to the new system, and the PFA have also expressed their disapproval.
Critics believe the move would rob the Premier League of its status as the best in the world.
The new system would prevent English clubs from paying wages comparable to those of other elite teams, which would not be required to comply with such rules.
This could lead to top footballers abandoning the league to join Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and other top European clubs.
The loss of star players would impact broadcast revenues, proving disastrous for the Premier League.
The system would reduce clubs’ incentives to invest in growth, as they would face restrictions on how much they could reinvest in their squads.
The new rules could also result in owners becoming wealthier in the short term, because they would be limited in how much they would have to spend on wages.
