Manchester City’s Phil Foden has been enjoying his time off from competitive football duties this summer with a stellar two-day British sporting experience at the weekend.

The absence of tournament football at the FIFA World Cup this summer has provided Foden with a rare, extended opportunity to step back from the high-pressure environment Manchester City’s relentless calendar.

For a player who has consistently logged 50+ matches per season since his breakthrough into senior mens’ football under Pep Guardiola in 2017, a period of recuperation serves as a vital psychological buffer for a player who has struggled in the last two campaigns.

While his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England international squad has generated debate among pundits and fans alike, the 26-year-old appears focused on utilising downtime to refresh his physical and mental state before the rigours of the upcoming club campaign.

Phil Foden’s weekend of blockbuster sport

Starting off on the Saturday afternoon, Phil Foden was present at Wimbledon within Centre Court’s prestigious Royal Box, watching the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala defeat reigning champion Iga Swiatek.

24 hours later, and the sporting action would continue for Foden, appearing at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, where he would also be snapped alongside Manchester City teammate Jack Grealish on the grid ahead of the race itself.

Foden’s calm before the storm

With the City Football Academy (CFA) schedule somewhat finalised, Phil Foden and the rest of the Manchester City squad not competing at the World Cup or exiting early are expected to report back for pre-season training on July 20.

This year is particularly crucial for the midfielder, with a new management regime under Enzo Maresca firmly in place and pre-season offering a clean slate to recalibrate his role and regain the devastating form that has characterised his tenure at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite his struggles of the last two seasons, Manchester City have offered their complete support to their star Academy graduate, who is set to sign a new and improved contract in the coming weeks – running until June 2030.
