Philippe Coutinho ‘to retire’ if he cannot extend with Vasco

Philippe Coutinho has settled on a stark choice, he will either agree a new Vasco da Gama deal or retire at 33, according to ESPN.

His current contract runs until June 2026, but planning for his future has already begun. Internally he has told the club he will not wear another shirt and does not want offers from rivals, Europe or the Arab world.

That stance leaves the decision with the board. If they decline to extend his deal in the future, it would in effect bring his career to a close.

The feeling is mutual at Vasco, who have already shown strong interest in keeping him, and he remains central to Fernando Diniz’s system.

A meeting to decide the next steps is scheduled for after the Copa do Brasil final against Corinthians.

For now, Coutinho’s focus is that final and the pursuit of silverware with the club that raised him. An extension appears the natural route for this story to continue, but talks will wait until the dust has settled.
