Montanier, 61, arrived in February after Eirik Horneland’s departure. He was unable to take the Verts into the top two of Ligue 2, the automatic promotion places.

A spring sequence of three defeats, 0-2 against Bastia, 0-3 against Troyes and 1-2 at Rodez, proved decisive, with Le Mans taking second place and securing promotion.

Saint-Étienne then lost to Nice in the promotion play-off, drawing 0-0 before a 1-4 reverse, so they remain in Ligue 2.

The club are targeting a return to the top flight next season and have been seeking a new coach for a week.
