Philippe Montanier has confirmed his agreement to take over as coach of AS Saint-Etienne if the role is offered to him, according to L’Équipe. Les Verts are continuing to look at other candidates.

Following the announcement that Eirik Horneland is to leave his role as coach following last weekend’s defeat against Stade de Reims, former Nottingham Forest coach Philippe Montanier has emerged as the frontrunner to replace the Norwegian.

While other names reportedly feature on the club’s shortlist, including Franck Haise, ex-Southampton boss Will Still and Wilfried Nancy – recently sacked by Celtic – Montanier’s wide managerial experience and modest salary demands make him the favourite.

Montanier – a former Saint-Etienne goalkeeper – guided Toulouse to promotion from Ligue 2 in 2022. Les Verts currently sit in fifth place in the table – two points behind second-placed Red Star. A decision will not be made before this Saturday’s match against Boulogne-sur-Mer, which will be Horneland’s final game in charge.
