Former midfielder Piá, 52, who played for Ponte Preta, Corinthians and Santos, was arrested on Monday night in Sumaré, São Paulo state. It is his fifth detention, with previous cases tied to cash machine theft.

According to Globo.com, he was held on a warrant to serve two years, eight months and 20 days in a closed regime for attempting to manipulate the result of a 2018 match.

The arrest came at about 21:00 at Condomínio Real Park during a BAEP patrol. Police said he tried to flee after officers signalled for him to stop.

They added he broke a condominium barrier while attempting to escape, and no illicit material was found. He told officers he ran because he was wanted by the courts.

He was taken to the Sumaré police station and remains at the disposal of the judiciary.

In 2018, while working in Independente de Limeira’s football department, prosecutors alleged he offered between R$ 3,000 and R$ 7,000 to the club’s goalkeeper to concede goals against Comercial in the state’s fourth tier. The game finished 0-0.

He denied the accusations, but was convicted in August 2022 under the Fan Statute for promising an advantage to another player to influence a result.

His first high-profile police case came in July 1999, when, as a Ponte Preta player, he was indicted over the killing of a mechanic in Limeira. He was later acquitted.
