Newcastle United secured their first victory of the UEFA Champions League season with an away trip to face Belgian league leaders Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Magpies got off to a fine start. Sandro Tonali saw his effort from outside the box deflected by Nick Woltemade to open the scoring in the 17th minute.

Just before half time, winger Anthony Elanga was brought down inside the box, and Anthony Gordon converted from the spot to double the lead to a 2-0 advantage.

Anthony Gordon converted his second of the evening, once again from the spot after a VAR check confirmed handball, making it 3-0.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, a brilliant counter attack ended as Harvey Barnes proved to be a super substation as he calmly converted from inside the box, putting an exclamation mark on an emphatic 4-0 result, to give Newcastle United their first victory of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League season.
