Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back in full training after a bruising Africa Cup of Nations and could start for Marseille against Nantes on Sunday. According to L'Équipe, he returned to the club on Tuesday and has taken part in full sessions.
While his team thrashed Bourg-Péronnas 6-0 on 21 December in the Coupe de France, Aubameyang was caught in tensions between OM and Gabon over a left thigh issue felt in the 1-0 win at Monaco on 14 December, leaving him with a frustrating tournament. He came on in the 33rd minute in the 0-1 defeat to Cameroon instead of being rested, then was sent back to the club after the second match, a 2-3 loss to Mozambique, despite starting and scoring.
Head coach Thierry Mouyouma later said there was a protocol with Marseille and, once Gabon were out of contention, they agreed to release the striker so he could continue treatment. Back in Marseille, Aubameyang did not linger in the treatment room and privately reported only some apprehension that did not limit his work.
He trained with the group and was on the pitch on Friday morning. Roberto De Zerbi said things had gone badly with Gabon, added he was pleased to have Aubameyang involved, and discussed his situation with the squad.
The Gabonese government has since blamed Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga for the team’s failure, issuing bans. At 36, Aubameyang could end his international career on 86 caps and 40 goals. At club level he has been a regular, with 14 Ligue 1 appearances, and although Amine Gouiri has been cleared to rejoin full training after October shoulder surgery, Aubameyang has held the starting role in recent sessions.
