Manchester United are enjoying a resurgence under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, but they have been plagued by defensive issues this season. The Red Devils have conceded 37 goals in 26 Premier League games, the joint second-most behind Bournemouth (45) in the top ten of the league table.

United conceded 54 times in 38 Premier League games last season, and upgraded their goalkeeper position last summer by signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian has been a revelation so far, but concerns remain about the backline.

There have been signs of improvement under Carrick, especially following the switch to a back four. United have conceded five goals in the last five league games and have picked up two clean sheets.

While the midfield remains the centre of attention ahead of the summer, United are also linked with defensive reinforcements, especially since Harry Maguire’s future remains unclear. A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person states that the Premier League giants have identified Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu as the perfect candidate to address their needs.

Omnipresent this season

Kalulu initially joined Juventus on loan from AC Milan in the summer of 2024, but his impressive performances convinced the Bianconeri to sign him permanently at the end of the season. A centre-back by trade, the 25 year old is equally adept at operating as a right-back, making him a key figure for Juventus.

The Frenchman’s importance is evident from the fact that he has played every minute of every game for the Serie A giants this season.

United are also sweating on the future of Diogo Dalot, who reportedly has admirers at Real Madrid. Kalulu’s versatility, as such, could also appeal to the Red Devils.

However, a previous report relayed by The Peoples Person states that Juventus have no desire to part ways with their prized asset. An update on the situation has now emerged.

Juventus planning renewal

According to Tuttosport via IlBianconero, Juventus are planning to tie Kalulu down to a new deal to ward off his suitors. The player is under contract until 2029, and he reportedly pockets around €3.85 million gross on his current deal.

However, the Bianconeri are planning to hand him an improved contract to ensure he is not swayed by lucrative offers from the Premier League. It was previously believed that United could tempt the Serie A giants with a premium offer for their prized asset.

It now appears that Juventus have the Frenchman firmly in their plans, so a move away from Turin looks increasingly unlikely.

Final Thoughts

United already have Noussair Mazraoui as Diogo Dalot’s backup in the squad, while there is a growing belief that Maguire could end up extending his stay at the Theatre of Dreams. As such, the Red Devils are unlikely to lose sleep over the recent developments.
