No one would have predicted that it would be RC Lens that would take the fight to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 this season.

The club did not spend big in the summer transfer window after a season in which they missed out on all forms of European football. At the end of the campaign, Will Still parted, with former Olympique Lyonnais manager Pierre Sage taking the helm at the Bollaert.

His appointment has proven to be inspired. Currently, after 21 matchdays, PSG are top, but only by two points, with Lens hot on their heels. Les Sang et Or lost their lead at the top following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Olympique de Marseille two matchdays ago.

On Saturday, Lens will face PSG’s local rivals, Paris FC. Speaking ahead of that game, Sage addressed the ongoing title race in Ligue 1, and what his side need to do in order to come out on top. “PSG are takeable… if they aren’t PSG. It depends a lot on them. We can, on our end, outplay them at moments in a game, but to do so for a full game is way too difficult,” said Sage.

The Lens manager continued, “In any case, there is hope. I’ve never beaten PSG but if that could happen on 12th April, that wouldn’t be bad! For the title, I think that, in any case, we will have to beat them (PSG).”
