Stefano Pioli admits Fiorentina fans ‘were right to jeer’ after a 2-1 home defeat to Como. ‘We keep making the same mistakes, I have to find different solutions.’
The Viola were jeered off the field by their fans at the Stadio Franchi after fumbling the lead through Rolando Mandragora, losing control of the match in the second half.
Marc Oliver Kempf equalised by nodding in a set play, but Jayden Addai struck from the tightest of angles to turn it around in stoppages.

“We were unable to control the ball in the second half, and if you always just pump it over the midfield, you give it back to them and they have the quality to use it,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.
“We had the conditions to do well, but didn’t make the most of them. These are errors that keep repeating themselves, I have got to find some different solutions. It’s a pity, the first half approach was good, but a team of our status ought to control things better.”
This means Fiorentina have managed just two points from four Serie A rounds, suffering two consecutive home defeats to Napoli and Como.
They stood under the stands at the final whistle while the supporters hurled insults at them.
“I feel very sad because I know the team is working hard, and then the performances don’t reflect that,” noted Pioli.
“We all hoped for a different start, the fans quite rightly jeered us. We are only at the start, but we’ve got to do more. It is a sad day, but I’ve got to think hard and find solutions, because this path does have potential.”

It is not the first time that Fiorentina have fumbled a lead and visibly lost intensity as the game has worn on, so is this a fitness issue?
“In order to maintain that intensity, you need to preserve energy when keeping the ball, not sitting deep. Instead, we tried to bypass the midfield too much. It’s not a physical issue, but we are coming late to the second ball.
“I thought we would win a few more duels, as I saw the team I wanted in the first 30 minutes, now we need to be that consistently for 90 minutes.”
Pioli was also irritated with the referee following their 2-1 defeat, as the equaliser came from a free kick situation.
“I just want to point out there are very few times I’ve seen a foul given for the challenge where we conceded the first Como goal. If anything, that was a free kick for us. So there is responsibility, but these are still serious mistakes from the officials.”
