With Palmeiras idle during the international window, Piquerez’s injury overshadowed the outings of the club’s other seven foreign players.

Piquerez suffered ankle ligament damage 12 minutes into Uruguay’s friendly with England, which will sideline him for at least a month. According to Globo.com, he will try to recover in time for the World Cup, where he is a first-choice under Marcelo Bielsa.

Gustavo Gómez played the full 90 minutes in both Paraguay friendlies against Greece and Morocco. His displays were encouraging, even though Paraguay lost to Brazil’s opening World Cup opponent.

First-time Paraguay call-up Maurício came off the bench and impressed with his movement, linking well with Julio Enciso, a recent Palmeiras target. Sosa had only 21 minutes against Greece and was unused versus Morocco, though the regular international should still make the World Cup.

For Argentina, Flaco López and Giay each logged around 30 minutes in the win over Mauritania, then did not feature against Zambia, both at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires. In a training match against the under-20s the day after the 2-1 win, both started and Flaco scored the only goal.

Giay is unlikely to go to the World Cup, while Flaco is close to selection after Strasbourg forward Joaquin Panichelli, his main rival for a spot, suffered a right knee ligament injury and was ruled out.

Jhon Arias scored in Colombia’s 2-1 loss to Croatia, then played only the first half of a 3-1 defeat to France. He has rejoined Palmeiras and is one of the few who should start against Grêmio on Thursday.

Emiliano Martínez played only stoppage time in Uruguay’s draws with England and Algeria, so his World Cup place remains uncertain. His versatility, covering holding midfield and centre-back for Palmeiras, could help. Martínez and the Paraguay contingent return on Wednesday, with Giay and Flaco due later, and the staff will assess workloads before Thursday’s 21:00 kick-off in Barueri.
