Palmeiras left-back Piquerez is making encouraging progress in his recovery from right ankle ligament surgery after being injured against England at Wembley during the last international window.

According to Nosso Palestra, there is no firm return date, but optimism has grown among staff and the player over a possible World Cup involvement.

He will continue daily assessments at Palmeiras and is expected to begin light, controlled work on the grass soon.

An optimistic view within the club had been for a return six to eight weeks from the time of surgery.

In Piquerez’s absence, Abel Ferreira has rotated at left-back. Jefté, the initial understudy, sustained a right thigh muscle injury. Academy product Arthur has featured and started the most recent match against Athletico-PR.

The head coach has also occasionally used right-back Khellven on the left as an emergency option.

Palmeiras host Jacupiense in the Copa do Brasil on 23 April at 19:30, Brasília time.
