Palmeiras left-back Piquerez has undergone surgery on his right ankle ligament injury and will now begin rehabilitation, aiming to return before the World Cup.
According to Globo.com, the operation took place at Hospital Sírio Libanês in central São Paulo and was deemed successful by Palmeiras. Fifa will cover his wages during his lay-off.
The next steps include a period of rest followed by physiotherapy. Since returning to Brazil, he has been under the care of Palmeiras’ Health and Performance unit.
The decision to operate, taken by Piquerez and the club, forms part of a plan geared towards a comeback before the tournament. He is Uruguay’s first-choice in his position.
The left-back sustained the ligament injury during the friendly against England. After 10 minutes of the first half, he was shielding the ball on the byline when a heavy challenge from forward Madueke, of Arsenal, saw him leave the Wembley pitch on a stretcher.
