Niccolò Pisilli has played 330 minutes this season, including nearly 94 as a starter against Lecce.
Roma are in dire straits, and after providing the assist for Artem Dovbyk against the Salento side, he’s looking to confirm his midfield role against Sassuolo.
He’ll start for the first time in front of his home fans, and in a time of need for Roma, the youth product, born and raised in a suburb of the capital with the Giallorossi colors at heart, certainly isn’t holding back.
Against the Neroverdi, he’ll have another chance to convince Gian Piero Gasperini not to let him go.
“He’s found little space at Roma thanks to the performances of Cristante, Koné, and El Aynaoui. I have a high regard for Pisilli. Perhaps, as with all young players, it would be better to play more. If someone can do that at Roma, that’s fine, but right now there’s no room,” Gasperini said of Pisilli on the eve of the match against Genoa.
The situation now, however, is different: the Moroccan is out, Manu Koné’s performances are declining because he has no replacements, and even Cristante, who will be suspended against Sassuolo, has had little or no rest this season.
Several teams are ready to embrace Pisilli, most notably Daniele De Rossi’s Genoa, who would like to bring him back after his coaching stint at Roma, but in one of his latest outings, Gasperini himself has locked him down: “There are few alternatives, and his departure in January is unlikely.”
After his performance against Lecce, Pisilli stated: “I haven’t played much, but I’ve grown by playing against top-level players.” These words reveal a certain maturity despite his young age.
More than ever, his destiny is in his hands, or rather, in his feet, and it’s not out of the question that, even with the return of El Aynaoui, Gasp might decide not to let go of the U21 international.
Discussions about a possible transfer have certainly been postponed until the end of January, and around Trigoria, his talent is not up for discussion: only a loan deal is possible.
