Pizzi ended his playing career at 36 with an on-pitch farewell as Estoril hosted Benfica in the Liga Portugal Betclic finale at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota.
According to Glorioso 1904, the midfielder had announced his retirement a week earlier and was honoured at the ground, where he addressed supporters.
The number 21 started for Ian Cathro’s side and was withdrawn in the 58th minute for Rafik Guitane.
As he made his way off, the stadium rose to applaud and players formed a guard of honour for the former Benfica man.
In a short address after the match, he thanked his family, friends and everyone who supported him in and out of stadiums, saying he was proud of his career and felt fortunate to share so many good moments.
Between 2014 and 2021 he played 360 competitive games for Benfica, scoring 94 goals and providing 91 assists, and won 11 trophies, at times wearing the captain’s armband.
