Plane with Vasco protest flies over Rio before NFL game at Maracanã | OneFootball

Maracanã hosts Dallas Cowboys v Baltimore Ravens in the NFL at 17:25 Brasília time on Sunday. According to Globo.com, hours before kick-off a plane flew over Rio’s South Zone beaches carrying a Vasco supporters’ protest banner reading “O Maracanã também é do Vasco”.

Images showed the aircraft passing over Copacabana and Leme, shortly after another plane towed a banner promoting the NFL fixture at the stadium.

The flyover followed the club being denied permission to stage Copa do Brasil ties against Vitória and Palmeiras at the Maracanã.

There is also uncertainty over the Boca Juniors semi-final in the Copa Sudamericana. The board filed a formal request to play the Argentine side at the ground, but has not received a response from the Fla-Flu consortium. Recent vetoes have been justified by the pitch’s poor condition under a congested schedule.

The NFL event has added to tensions between Vasco and the consortium, which runs the stadium. The club launched a clothing collection with the NFL and planned match-day commercial activations at the Maracanã, but the marketing plan was curtailed after another veto.
