FC Bayern’s 2-1 win at Real Madrid has put them in an excellent position for the Champions League quarter-finals – but the victory at the Bernabéu obviously came at a price. Harry Kane in particular was pushed to his limits for this success

As coach Vincent Kompany confirmed before the Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli, the England striker was not 100% fit for action. „He played a bit above his pain threshold,“ explained the Belgian, confirming the impression of many observers that Kane did not look quite right in some scenes

Kane grits his teeth – all-clear follows

Despite his physical limitations, the 32-year-old delivered once again. Kane scored himself to make it 2-0 at one stage and was also involved in the opening goal – another example of his enormous importance in Munich’s game

At least Kompany gave the all-clear after the game: „There was no reaction the next day, that’s the most important thing.“ An indication that it is probably not a more serious injury

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Kane will play in the Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli. Kompany did not want to commit himself in this regard and emphasized that the final decision will only be made after the last training impressions

Kompany relies on rotation and squad width

In principle, the Bayern coach hinted that changes to the starting eleven are possible – also with a view to the upcoming second leg against Real Madrid. „I want to have a team that will be challenged in the same way as against Madrid,“ he explained

Kompany made it clear that the strategy of the season so far will be continued: „We are at this point because the entire team was involved.“ Rotation is not a new tool, but a central component of success

The 40-year-old deliberately left it open as to who will ultimately be on the pitch against St. Pauli: „I don’t know who will play yet, I’ll think about that tonight.“

One thing is clear, however: even without complete certainty about Kane’s fitness, FC Bayern have enough quality to solve the task in Hamburg – and at the same time conserve strength for the decisive clash with Real Madrid.
