Evangelos Marinakis has dismissed Sean Dyche after a crisis meeting that followed the 0-0 draw with Wolves, making him Nottingham Forest’s third managerial exit of the season as relegation fears grow.
Telegraph understands senior players recently raised concerns over Dyche’s methods and tactics, and the 35-shot stalemate accelerated the decision despite some directors fearing further disruption. Marinakis judged performances to be sliding and sensed a disconnect between squad and staff.
Selection and recruitment grated. Dyche persisted with Nicolas Dominguez on the left despite specialist wingers, James McAtee, a £25m signing, shone against Ferencvaros on January 29 then did not feature again, and Taiwo Awoniyi has not played since his solo goal at Brentford. Dyche wanted Premier League experience in January, targeting Dwight McNeil and Lewis Dunk, but neither arrived, Lorenzo Lucca joined from Napoli and he was unconvinced by £2m left-back Luca Netz.
Forest have won only two of their past 10 league matches, despite standout wins over Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford. Lows included a poor FA Cup exit at Wrexham, two defeats by Everton, a calamitous 1-0 loss in Braga and Friday’s reverse at Leeds. Recruitment and the role of global head of football Edu Gaspar will come under renewed scrutiny, with his future beyond the summer uncertain.
Upheaval began with Nuno Espírito Santo’s sacking on September 9 after relations deteriorated around Edu’s July appointment, despite Nuno taking Forest into Europe and the top four for months last season. Ange Postecoglou replaced him but lasted 39 days before his dismissal. Dyche and assistants Ian Woan and Steve Stone arrived in November, and he maintained Forest were in the bottom three when he took charge.
Marinakis must now find a fourth manager, with a two-legged tie against Fenerbahce later this month and an ambition to lift the Europa League. Yet the spectre of relegation, potentially inflicted by Nuno’s resurgent West Ham, dominates.
