Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Matchday 30, 18/04/2026

Having secured their place in the league but on a run of three consecutive games without a win, FC Lorient hosted Olympique de Marseille on Saturday, with the visitors looking for a success that would have allowed them to temporarily reclaim third place in the Ligue 1 table.

The Match

Fresh from a training camp in Spain, the afternoon seemed to be going well for Habib Beye’s men. After 20 minutes, despite a certain lack of creativity in the final third, their dominance of possession suggested that the work done over the past few days would soon bear fruit. But in Brittany, where Marseille have struggled this season, the tide turned against them once again.

Perfectly found in depth, Bamba Dieng held his ground against Leonardo Barlerdi and Benjamin Pavard, whose failed clearance fell to Panos Katseris, who wasted no time in beating the helpless Gerónimo Rulli. Trailing and plunged back into doubt, Marseille loosened their grip, leaving themselves increasingly exposed to Lorient’s counter-attacks, whilst Les Merlus happily exploited the vast spaces left in midfield by their opponents.

Having scored in the first half from a ball won by Dieng, Katseris thought he’d return the favour to his striker straight after the break, but this time saw Rulli make a superb save to deny the Senegalese. And what could have been a turning point in the match ultimately served only to delay the inevitable. Imprecise, toothless and as unbalanced as ever, Marseille were punished once again on the hour mark by Dieng, who went on to score his 15th goal of the season.

Stunned and unable to respond despite Beye’s attempts to make tactical adjustments, Marseille gradually faded away, watching their hopes of a top-three finish vanish under the sun at Le Moustoir. Fourth before kick-off in this 30th round of the French Ligue 1 championship, Marseille could finish it in a much more uncomfortable position, provided their rivals manage to come out on top in a thrilling race for Champions League qualification.

Marseille player ratings:

Gerónimo Rulli – 6

Although he could do nothing to prevent the two goals he conceded at Lorient this afternoon, the Argentine nevertheless shone on several occasions, delaying the inevitable.

Benjamin Pavard – 2

Once again involved in both of Lorient’s goals, the Frenchman had a nightmare afternoon. So much so that his attacking contributions were more noteworthy than his defensive ones.

Leonardo Balerdi – 3

Emerson –  4

Hamed Junior Traoré – 4

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 3

Himad Abdelli – 3

Starting alongside Højbjerg to make up for Quinten Timber’s last-minute withdrawal, the Algerian international certainly did nothing to change his critics’ minds. Lacklustre on the ball, he appeared to be overwhelmed by the physical challenge posed by the opposition’s midfielders.

Igor Paixão – 4

Mason Greenwood – 3

Amine Gouiri – 3

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 3

Although he was largely invisible for the first 45 minutes, Aubameyang looked more threatening in the second half, though he failed to hit the target against Lorient despite several attempts.

Selected Lorient player ratings:

Bamba Dieng – 8

Playing a key role in his team’s opening goal and scoring the second to make it 2-0, Dieng made life a living hell for his former teammates. With his back to goal, he dominated the Marseille defence.

Yvon Mvogo – 5

Arthur Avom – 7

With an impressive display, the Lorient number 62 gave his opponents in midfield a hard time. An accomplished performance, highlighted by his involvement in the Merlus’ first goal.
