The Match

After four games with only one goal scored, Bruno Génésio looked to fine-tune his team, shifting from the usual 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 formation with Hamza Igamane and Olivier Giroud both starting. The early signs were not promising as Lille’s new system seemed to collapse under the slightest pressure from their guests.

Paris breached the Lille defense with ease in the opening exchanges. Willem Geubbels forced interventions from Berke Özer and Aïssa Mandi before he finally got a touch of fortune in the 11th minute. Vincent Marchetti’s strike from distance clanged off the post, finding Geubbels unmarked and with a poacher’s scored his second of the season.

Lille rallied after the goal. The new attack began to show signs of synergy. Attacks began to flow and rip holes in the Paris backline. In the 40th minute, Lille would level the scores. Osame Sahraoui slipped past defenders before finding Giroud. The striker pinged the ball out to Romain Perraud, who returned the favour. Giroud slotted home to score his first league goal since August.

It was only a block from Kevin Trapp that prevented Giroud from finding his second minutes later, allowing Paris to enter the second half with the score level. Lille kept up the pressure in the second half. Igamane was constantly creating dangerous situations, but his final ball let him down. Chancel Mbemba’s header took a deflection off Moustapha Mbow and had to be saved on the line by Trapp.

Trapp would deny Giroud twice, but his work would be in vain. Marchetti tripped the substitute Hákon Arnar Haraldsson, awarding Lille a penalty. Giroud wouldn’t be denied a third time as he powered his effort home. Marchetti’s evening would turn from bad to worse, as his attempted clearance from a corner only flicked the ball towards Mandi at the far, who glanced home Lille’s third.

Marchetti’s marching orders would come, and to add a little more sting, his replacement, Lohann Doucet, would make an immediate impact, forcing home Paris’s second. Paris smelt blood in the water and looked rejuvenated, but would be hit with a sucker punch. Timothée Kolodziejczak was struck in the arm by Marius Broholm’s powerful effort, earning a penalty late in injury time. Broholm would slide home his shot to put Lille out of reach.

Lille Player Ratings

Berke Özer, 5

Romain Perraud, 6

Aïssa Mandi, 7

Replaced by Nathan Ngoy in the 86th minute.

Chancel Mbemba, 4

Thomas Meunier, 6

Osame Sahraoui, 6

A solid performance from the winger. He showed a decent amount of promise attacking down the left in place of Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who was not included in the matchday squad. Sahraoui was influential in the equaliser. Replaced by Marius Broholm in the 73rd minute.

Ayyoub Bouaddi, 6

Nabil Bentaleb, 5

Replaced by Ngal’ayel Mukau in the 73rd minute.

Félix Correia, 6

Olivier Giroud, 6

Giroud the last few months, has often looked like a passenger for this Lille side. The system in place seemed to leave him entirely isolated up front. Against Paris, he looked like a changed player. Igamane’s movement and positioning often created space for Giroud, and allowed him to become the focal point to the attack. He tested Trapp frequently and will perhaps be disappointed that he only scored twice, with several of his efforts guided straight towards the keeper. Replaced by Ethan Mbappé in the 86th minute

Hamza Igamane, 5

There were glimpses of the player Lille hope Igamane will become in the North of France, but more often than not, there was a sense of frustration about his evening. His final ball never seemed to find the right player, and it felt like he often lost his duels with Samir Chergui. Replaced by Hákon Arnar Haraldsson in the 61st minute.

Paris FC Selected Player Ratings

Vincent Marchetti, 2

A good first-half performance would be swiftly forgotten in the second when he became Paris’s villain. He was at fault as Lille mounted their comeback, fouling Haraldsson, before setting Mandi up. His situation wasn’t helped by his replacement, Lohann Doucet, scoring immediately.

Kevin Trapp, 6

Despite having three put past him, it was a good performance from the goalkeeper. He made several key saves that kept Paris in the game.

Samir Chergui, 5
