THE MATCHGoals from Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired Olympique de Marseille top of the Ligue 1 table on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Stade Brestois at the Stade Vélodrome. A much-changed Roberto De Zerbi side bounced back from midweek defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League, also going above Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the league before the French champions face Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday evening.
Arthur Vermeeren and Pierre Emile Højbjerg came into Marseille’s XI, as Angel Gomes also started the game as an attacking midfielder. The Englishman began the game brightly, as his whipped ball immediately almost found Aubameyang in the box in the first minute. Mason Greenwood was next to pick up the ball in the box, but blasted his strike over the bar before providing a lovely ball to put Aubameyang one on one with Majecki, but his chip over the keeper drilled wide of the post. For Brest Mboup was released early into the OM box and Geronimo Rulli would have to make himself big to pull off a huge save early.
Les Phocéens would then open the scoring, and it would be Angel Gomes that was given the goal after his strike from a direct free kick was spilled by Brest goalkeeper Majecki as the Vélodrome erupted (25′). It was another Englishman, this time in Mason Greenwood who went on to double the score just minutes later, as Igor Paixao’s speedy run into the box was blocked and the Brazilian was fouled. Referee Willy Delajod pointed to the spot and it was Greenwood who stepped up and confidently converted for his ninth goal in all competitions with OM this season (32′). Les Olympiens would go into the break comfortably in the lead, safe in the knowledge they would be top of the league if things stayed the way they were.
A quiet opening to the second period saw several half chances, and the rhythm of the match died down slightly. Angel Gomes spurned a chance to grab his second of the game with a late run at the far post, before Brest would start to build some pressure of their own. But not before long OM would strike with deadly efficiency. This time a freshly-introduced Matt O’Riley was released down the right side, and then provided a pin-point cross into Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to slide home and effectively kill off the contest at the Stade Vélodrome.OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE PLAYER RATINGS

The Englishman’s first half was one of his best since joining Marseille in the summer. De Zerbi utilised him as an attacking midfielder who roamed between the lines and it worked to an efficient degree in the first period – he linked up play between the wingers, the midfield and Aubameyang up top, and showed real quality in his crossing. He was lucky to grab his second goal of the season when Majecki spilled his effort into the back of the net.
