Bayern Munich come away from the Spanish capital with a slender aggregate lead after goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane sent the Bundesliga representatives on their way, but Kylian Mbappé’s strike keep Los Blancos in the tie.

Vincent Kompany made five changes to his Bayern team that secured a dramatic stoppage-time comeback win against Freiburg on Saturday, with Harry Kane the biggest returnee having picked up an injury while on international duty with England.

Bayern Munich lead through Luis Díaz as Manuel Neuer denies Kylian Mbappé

Winless in their last nine UEFA Champions League games against Real Madrid (two draws, seven defeats), Bayern’s first eye on goal came via Konrad Laimer, who fired over the bar from the edge of Madrid’s box inside the first minute.

Dayot Upamecano then squandered a golden opportunity to fire Bayern into what would have been a deserved lead, but he failed to connect cleanly with Kane’s cushioned header, spurning his chance from six-yards out.

Manuel Neuer, at 40, then showcased just why he’s the GOAT. Bayern’s custodian came rushing out to deny Kylian Mbappé before deflecting Vinícius Junior’s effort wide of the post, getting down low to deny the Brazilian, before again denying Mbappé.

But as Real gained a foothold on the game, it was Kompany’s charges who took the lead when Serge Gnabry, playing as the ten, played through Luis Díaz who slotted the ball under Andriy Lunin with a composed first-time finish.

Harry Kane doubles Bayern Munich’s lead shortly after the break

Aleksandar Pavlović dispossessed Álvaro Carreras on the half-way line before playing in Michael Olise down the right. The Frenchman, who is enjoying his best output to date, found Kane whose first time shot was placed beautifully into the bottom corner.

Comfortable in possession, Real were handed a golden opportunity when Upamecano’s headed back-pass was short, but Vinícius’ attempt to round Neuer was poor, and his effort wide of the German’s post.

Real’s persistence eventually paid off with the introduction of Jude Bellingham, who found Mbappé with a low cross. Neuer pushed the Frenchman’s effort onto the crossbar but was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line as Bayern take a one-goal advantage back to the Allianz Arena ahead of next week’s clash.
